The Maker Studio
We are excited to announce a new collaboration that will expand our offerings for the Montclair, New Jersey community!
We have partnered with Elizabeth Smith Jacobs, a Montclair-based teaching artist for more than 35 years and founder of The Clay Studio in Montclair in 1991. Elizabeth has a BFA from SUNY Purchase and a Masters in Art Education from New York University. She is mixed-media artist who works in a variety of mediums, from clay to photography, from metal to fabric, from cement to bones, and has been an exhibiting artist for nearly three decades.
This year, Elizabeth is transforming The Clay Studio into The Maker Studio and working in partnership with The Creativity Caravan to introduce new mixed media classes, workshops, and camps. Elizabeth will be teaching and hosting an eclectic variety of focused workshops at her home studio, a five-minute walk from The Creativity Caravan and three blocks south of the Montclair Art Museum.
The inaugural class, African Shekere, takes place Sunday, February 25. A shekere is a percussion instrument of West African origin consisting of a hollow gourd covered with a loose netting on which beads, shells, or seeds are strung, played by shaking. In this workshop, participants will learn how to create this webbing, while adorning it with an assortment of beads and embellishing the exposed gourd with a pyrography (burning) tool. The class is suitable for ages 12 and up and is limited to 6 students. All materials are included.
Create and (adorn/decorate/collage) a 4" x 5” film box, which perfectly fits a quarter sized sheet of standard/8 1/2 x 11 paper, with an attached pencil holder. This station is a great way to recycle paper that is printed on one side.
This will be a drop-in workshop on Earth Day from 1-4 pm for ages 7 and up. This is a perfect opportunity for family collaboration.
All materials will be supplied. A suggested ($10) donation is requested but not required. 80% of proceeds will go to an Earth-friendly charity!
In this workshop, participants will create two silk scarves (10” x 58”), one using silk dyes and another using (bleeding/non color-fast) tissue paper. (Smocks will be available, but please wear art-making clothes as dyes will stain.)
Suitable for ages 10 and up.
$85 includes all materials.
