A Creative Battery Pack for Poets

25.00

Wednesdays, May 9, 23 & 30; 7:00-9:00 p.m.

This three-part series will help you generate, develop and revise a number of new poems. We will read poems, take apart poems, start new poems, revise poems, and discuss what makes poems work (or not). Participants will leave with new drafts, as well as techniques, strategies, creative prompts and motivation.

Session 1
Wednesday, May 9
The Odds Are with Us

The more new poems we start, the more good poems we’re likely to have, and the stronger our poems will become. This session will focus on approaches to beginning poems, presenting a variety of prompts and jump-starts to make poems happen.

Session 2
Wednesday, May 23
The Image & the Imagination

Virtually every poem could benefit from the addition of vivid images, so this session will focus on the imaginative development of sensory details and vibrant, rich language.

Session 3
Wednesday, May 30
Real Poets Revise

When we nail down a draft of a poem, we have, indeed, accomplished something, but it is probably not our best work, not the poem we are capable of writing. This is where revision comes in: there is a percolating, a steeping, a deepening that takes some time. Many people have said this in many different ways, but, essentially, the willingness to revise is the mark of a serious writer.

In this session, we will explore a variety of approaches and techniques to maturing and advancing our promising “baby” poems.

$25 per session; All levels of experience welcome. All sessions led by Elinor Mattern, poet, artist, retired English professor, Atlantic Cape Community College.
