The Places of the Past Remain in Us is a blind drawing workshop led by artist, Stephanie Spitz and utilizes mindfulness techniques. Participants will activate memories of their childhood home, sense by sense, and then translate them into abstract and/or representational drawings. All ages are welcome, no previous drawing experience is needed.
Stephanie received her MFA in Studio Art from Montclair State University and her BFA in Painting from Drake University. She has exhibited nationally in Iowa, New Jersey, and New York. In 2016 she was an artist-in-residence at the New Rochelle Downtown Artist Residency in conjunction with Residency Unlimited. She currently works as a painting instructor, academic administrator, and artist in Montclair, New Jersey.
Stephanie explores the parallels between art making and home building through painting, drawing, video, and installation. Having grown up renovating several houses with her family, the concept of home became informed by the mass produced, generic materials of home building and decorating as well as the experience of living in an unfinished house. This led Stephanie to create her own formula for drawing and painting which utilizes amateur home videos and photographs to abstract space and highlight the ongoing nature of renovation, and home making.
